QUESTION:

Instructions: You must contribute at least one post of 250 words–roughly one page, 12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced. Please write a detailed, grammatically correct response to the questions/prompts below. In addition to responses to the essays, you may include references to Vargas’ video lecture and supplemental readings. For Nguyen, please see https://vietnguyen.info/2018/author-viet-thanh-nguyen-struggles-refugee-america-2

1. Compare/contrast the challenges each author has faced.

2. Compare/contrast what each author has to say about what it means to be “American.”You may want to consider why Nguyen insists on referring to himself as a “refugee”–even though no one would mistake him for one now. And why Vargas struggles with this concept and finally why he has to “come out” in terms of his immigration status and sexuality.

3. How does each author deal with the issues of memory and forgetting? Nguyen’s essay very specifically addresses these issues in several places. Vargas’ essay deals with these issues in a more subtle way.

4. *Challenge question: Consider popular representations of undocumented immigrants and refugees. First, what does each author have to say about these representations? (You’ll find answers to these questions in Vargas’ video lecture, in Nguyen’s essay, and in the supplementary readings.) Based on what you’ve read/watched how do you think this affects both the authors and certain groups of people, in general.
