1. Select an organization of your choice and critically analyse the strategic role of operations management within the organization. Evaluate how the operations function interacts with marketing, finance, human resources and information systems to support organizational objectives and create competitive advantage. [10 Marks]
2. Identify a significant operational problem faced by your selected organization. Apply at least three appropriate operations management tools or techniques to analyse the problem, identify its root causes and evaluate alternative solutions. Justify why the selected tools are appropriate. [15 Marks]
3. Critically evaluate the organization’s capacity, quality and process performance. Use appropriate analytical techniques such as process mapping, bottleneck analysis, Pareto analysis, Fishbone analysis, Lean, Six Sigma or Theory of Constraints to identify opportunities for improvement. Recommend measurable operational improvements. [15 Marks]
4. Evaluate how the organization collects, manages and uses information to support operational decision-making. Analyse the role of ERP, business intelligence, data analytics, cloud systems, AI or other information technologies in improving operational efficiency, responsiveness and competitive advantage. [15 Marks]
5. Propose an operational improvement project for the organization, such as technology implementation, process redesign, new product/service development or supply-chain improvement. Develop a Gantt Chart identifying activities, durations, dependencies, milestones and responsibilities. Critically evaluate the importance of effective project management to successful operational implementation. [10 Marks]
6. Using the operational improvement project proposed in Question 5, develop a PERT/CPM network. Calculate the expected project duration, identify the critical path, determine project float/slack and evaluate the consequences of delays to critical activities. Explain how PERT/CPM can support managerial decision-making. [15 Marks]
7. Critically evaluate the organization’s operations strategy in both domestic and global contexts. Analyse issues such as sourcing, supply-chain resilience, logistics, capacity, quality, cost, cultural differences, geopolitical risks and international competition. Recommend an operations strategy that supports long-term competitive advantage. [10 Marks]
8. Critically evaluate how emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, automation, IoT, predictive analytics, digital twins or cloud computing are transforming the organization’s operational functions. Assess the benefits, limitations, risks and implementation challenges, and develop a 3–5 year technology-enabled operations roadmap. [10 Marks]
