The purpose of this portfolio of work is to enable you to identify and achieve the prescribed learning outcomes of this module: NUR09403/NUR09173 Exploring the Theory and Application of Law and Ethical Reasoning in Nursing Practice. You are required to write about an ethical dilemma encountered in nursing practice, relate this to the knowledge gained on this module, and provide an evaluation and analysis of what you have learned. This portfolio is designed to assess the module learning outcomes listed below.

Academic Writing

Academic writing is usually in third person, but first person may sometimes be acceptable. In this writing style, you use evidence to support your statements/assertions in your assessment and create a coherent discussion based on this evidence. This is an essential skill that allows you to produce written work that demonstrates your achievement of the module’s learning outcomes within your portfolio. Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing is essential in part 1 of your portfolio (ethical dilemma) to enable you to accurately relay the ethical situation to the reader. You will be describing a person, perhaps their family or carers, identifying their relevant health issues, stating the nature of care being delivered, and outlining the role of staff involved. This will allow you to explain enough information to create a clear picture of the situation and clarify the ethical dilemma present.

Critical Writing

At this level of your studies, you are evaluated on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 9. Writing Your Portfolio

The portfolio provides an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the module learning outcomes by discussing and analysing an ethical dilemma relevant to your clinical nursing practice. All parts of the portfolio should be written in an academic style. The use of first person is only allowed in part 3. Avoid using slang, colloquial, or chatty writing. Please refer to the preceding section of this template for guidance on academic writing. The total word count of the portfolio should be around 2,000 words. If your submitted portfolio has more or less than 10% of the required word count, then you will lose marks. The reference list is not part of this word count. Referencing/evidence use and structure/clarity of text are each worth 5% of your total mark.

Part 1: Ethical Dilemma

• About: From your nursing practice, you are asked to identify a real or hypothetical scenario you are aware constitutes an ethical dilemma. This section should be around 400 words and is worth 30% of your mark.
• What to include: First, you should cite the importance of your own Code of Practice or the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses in relation to confidentiality and then clearly describe the situation. Then, you should outline the scenario with reference to its ethical You should clarify the main principles of biomedical ethics (and/or other relevant aspects) that are in conflict and briefly indicate why, in order to highlight a clear dilemma. This part of the portfolio is meant to be descriptive and impactful so, if relevant, you may outline any emotional aspects.

• Things to avoid: You should not provide a clinical/case study with biomedical information. • What to include: This part of the portfolio is where you unpick the ethical dilemma you presented in part 1 of your portfolio, and relate the theories and principles you learned about in the module to clinical practice. You must discuss at least two relevant principles of biomedical ethics and at least two normative ethical theories in relation to your scenario. If relevant to your scenario, you must also consider and discuss legal context, professional values, codes of conduct or ICN Code, and/or social/cultural aspects.
• Things to remember: You have to provide a critical discussion in relation to your scenario. This section is meant to demonstrate your ability to ethically analyse difficult clinical scenarios with competing considerations. Please refer to the module lectures and reading resources to ensure you have in-depth understanding of the topics you engage with in the portfolio.
• Things to avoid: Do not simply describe, define, and/or list the principles, theories, or other relevant considerations. Do not add new details to the scenario under this section, as these details should only be reserved for part 1. Do not fragment your discussion by using too many subheadings. Do not attempt to make your scenario fit a normative theory or vice versa.

Part 3: Lessons for Future Practice

• About: This section is the shortest in the portfolio and should be around 300 words. It targets how you will use the lessons you have learned from the ethical dilemma to inform your future practice. It is worth 15% of your mark.
• What to include: This is meant to clarify your understanding of how the professional, legal, and ethical considerations discussed in parts 1 and 2 of the portfolio can support and enhance your ethical judgement and decision-making within nursing practice. This part may include actionable steps you may wish to take in your future practice, based on what you have learned from the scenario. As this section relates closely to your professional practice, the use of first person may be appropriate but is not
• Things to remember: If you wish to cite important evidence to support your reflection, you may also include this. Make sure that the focus remains on what you have learned from the ethical dilemma (and your analysis of it), and how you will use this knowledge in the future.
• Things to avoid: Do not crowd this section with too many citations and avoid generic statements. This section is reflective and personal, and should not be based on official or published recommendations for enhancing nursing practice.
