Scenario
The business: JES Digital Print Ltd
JES Digital Print Ltd is an established company. JES Digital Print Ltd produces high quality promotional material as well as personalised gifts from its factory based in an urban area of the country. The company slogan is “Delivery at Pace”.
Sarah Jansen, Luis Erikkson and Tim Smith worked together for a multinational print company. In 2005 they decided to start their own business, JES Digital Print Ltd. Over the next 10 years they successfully ran the business increasing its share of local and national customers.
Sarah, Luis and Tim manage the business together. All major decisions require authorisation from all three partners. Sarah is responsible for Human Resources, Luis for Production and Tim is in charge of Technical Operations and Research and Development.
Sarah considers herself to be a charismatic leader. Most of her time is spent dealing with job agencies, recruiting temporary staff and organising their training. The business has three peak months a year when temporary staff are employed. The staff require one month’s training before they can work in the factory.
Luis believes production requires dedicated hard-working individuals who are experts in their area of production and they should only focus on this. This means that production staff only ever work on one part of the production line and have little or no knowledge of the overall process. Luis regularly disciplines staff who do not meet his high standards.
Tim is known as the innovator of the partnership and actively seeks ideas and solutions from his staff.
Sarah, Luis and Tim have regularly disagreed over major decisions.
- Sarah has stated “This company needs to be led by someone with vision”.
- Luis has stated “If we don’t have the right staff we can always find more”.
- Tim has stated “Our staff are brilliant and they will find the solutions”.
During the last five years business has steadily grown. JES Digital Print Ltd has struggled to meet demand, leading to quality issues and late fulfilment of orders. This has adversely affected profits.
