Task

For this assessment, you are required to produce a PowerPoint slideshow and an oral presentation analysing the case study below:

China is Australia’s largest trading partner accounting for nearly one third (31%) of its global trade. However, since 2020 Australia’s trade activity with China has declined from thirteen percent (13%) to three percent (3%), totalling AU$ 245 billion (DFAT 2021). This decline in trade is largely reflected by Australia’s call for an independent inquiry into the origins of Covid-19 which upset China and it responded with an unprecedented wave of trade restrictions that froze many categories of Australian exports resulting in rapidly declining economic ties (Wilson 2021). For example, in May 2020, China applied anti-dumping duties on Australian barley and imposed subsequent tariffs on beef, wine and other consumer products (Wilson 2021).

On the other side of the world, Canada’s bilateral relationship with China was also steadily growing but started to rapidly deteriorate after Canada arrested Huawei’s executive Meng Wanzhou on the request of US (IISS 2021) for engaging in financial fraud and conspiracy in relation to US sanctions on Iran (Kharpal 2020). In retaliation, China blocked Canadian exports like canola, soybeans and pork (Gardner & Panetta 2019) worth millions of dollars.

With this information in mind, your oral presentation needs to address the following situations:

1. You are an Australian trade diplomat communicating to the Chinese embassy to argue against the case for imposing trade restrictions.
2. Address the following requirements in your oral presentation:

• Provide a brief background on the trade dispute between the two countries.
• Critically analyse the trade dispute using relevant international business (IB) concepts, principles, and theories provided in the learning materials (for example, globalisation, national differences in terms of political, economic and legal systems, international trade theory, regional integration, foreign exchange, etc.).
• Discuss the implications of the trade dispute on specific industry/sectors (e.g., manufacturing, services, etc.) for the chosen country including a critical analysis of the governance, operational and ethical aspects of the dispute.
• Propose a dispute settlement approach (as recommendations) to resolve the trade dispute between the two countries. You are required to align your recommendations to your trade position (i.e., Australian trade diplomat writing to the Chinese embassy).
