What you will learn and what this module is about:

The purpose of the module is to equip you with a rigorous framework of knowledge and skills that enable you to develop as credible partners to line managers. This framework will allow you to remain cognisant of the contribution HR practice can make to organisational eVe ctiveness, including business decision making, as well as employee engagement, performance and wellbeing. The module examines the theoretical and practical applications of Human Resource Management (HRM), Organisational Behaviour (OB) and Organisational Development (OD) disciplines, and addresses issues concerned with managing individuals and teams within dynamic organisational contexts. Research focusing on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes is covered, as is research that highlights major contemporary changes and developments in practice. The module requires you to critically reflect on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint.

 

Description of module content:

Framed within the wider context of strategic HRM, this module includes critical examination of the impact of people management practices on organisational and individual behaviour. The module begins with an exploration of the managerial and business environments within with HR professionals work and evaluates how HR strategy is shsped by and developed in response to internal and external environmental factors. The focus then narrows to examine the changing role of the HR function, its influence on achieving competitive advantage, and the broader context in which it operates. Further to this, you will explore the application of key contemporary people practices relating to fields of Organisational behaviour (motivation, engagemen t, employee wellbeing etc…) and Organisational Development, and their impact on both individuals and teams. The module is also concerned with learner development of a business orientation, a concern with adding value through HR practice, and a range of skills pivotal to successful people management practice and effective leadership. This includes critical reflection, problem solving and decision-making skills; enhanced IT proficien cy; a range of team working and interpersonal skills and others associated with developing personal effectiveness and credibility at work.

  3. Critically evaluate major contemporary research in the fields of Organisational Development (OD) and Organisational Behaviour (OB) and understand their role in the development and implementationof effective, ethical people practices (individually and in teams).
  4. Develop and demonstrate essential skills in problem solving, ethical decision making, influencing, and working with others.

Assessment Component 1: Narrated poster presentation

This is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The recommendations will be judged in terms of their predicted effectiveness; this will involve a rating of their theoretical grounding (i.e. are they based on reliable theory?) as well as of their practicality, feasibility and originality.

You will submit a one page narrated powerpoint poster. Your narration should be no more than 10 minutes in length.

Assessment Brief:

You are the HR Manager of medium sized financial services organisation and have been asked to prepare a poster presentation for the Board of Directors, outlining the key strategic challenges facing the company’s HR function in the year ahead. In the poster presentation, you should address the following:

  • Identify and discuss two key strategic HR challenges facing the organisation within the next twelve
