1. Data (Feed Composition, DM Basis)

Maize meal889.013.0
Lucerne hay9017.09.5
Molasses755.012.5
Cottonseed cake9238.010.0

2. Nutrient Contribution Table (per 1 kg DM)

FeedstuffCP per kg DM (kg)ME per kg DM (MJ)
Maize meal0.090013.0
Lucerne hay0.17009.5
Molasses0.050012.5
Cottonseed cake0.380010.0

3. Feasibility Check

A feasibility check was conducted to determine if the target of CP = 12% and ME = 10 MJ/kg DM could be achieved simultaneously using the four feedstuffs provided. The check revealed that the target point does not lie within the feasible nutrient space of these feeds. The minimum ME achievable at CP = 12% is 10.75 MJ/kg, making the specified pair of targets infeasible without introducing additional feed ingredients.

4. Option A — Meet CP Target Exactly

Lucerne hay (17% CP) and Molasses (5% CP) were used in a Pearson square to meet CP = 12% exactly. Parts: Lucerne : Molasses = 7 : 5 ® Lucerne 58.33% (5.83 kg DM), Molasses 41.67% (4.17 kg DM).

Result: CP = 12.00%, ME = 10.75 MJ/kg DM. Practical limitation: High molasses inclusion (»5.56 kg

as-fed) is operationally challenging and can risk rapid fermentation; requires careful feeding management.

5. Option B — Meet ME Target Exactly

Lucerne hay (9.5 MJ/kg) and Molasses (12.5 MJ/kg) were used in a Pearson square to meet ME = 10 MJ/kg exactly. Parts: Lucerne : Molasses = 5 : 1 ® Lucerne 83.33% (8.33 kg DM), Molasses 16.67% (1.67 kg DM). Result: ME = 10.00 MJ/kg DM, CP = 15.00%. Practical note: Easier to feed with adequate fibre; oversupplies protein which is biologically safe but may be less economical.

6. Feed Mix Justification and Interpretation

Option A meets the CP target exactly but is impractical due to high molasses content. Option B meets the ME target exactly and is more practical, though it oversupplies protein by 3 percentage points. From a feeding management perspective, Option B is recommended unless the CP target must be met exactly for academic or trial purposes. Monitoring of animal performance, rumen health, and manure nitrogen should guide final feed adjustments.
