Assessment Introduction
Identify a case study organisation of your choice and select and examine a focal ‘operation’. (Note this operation could be at the level of the organisation or a process level). Your case study organisation should be one that you are very familiar with and within which you are able to conduct your own research. For example, you might choose a company you work for, work with, or one you are particularly interested to examine.
You are required to produce a report that uses key concepts and theories from the module to analyse the selected operation. The report should be presented in three parts:
- Part A: Provide a description and rationale for the focal operation under study. You should use a minimum of two operations management concepts such as the 4Vs and performance objectives to analyse the focal operation. (25% of marks)
- Part B: Research the wider supply network of your focal operation. Provide a diagrammatic outline accompanied by a brief description and analysis of the wider supply network. (25% of marks)
- Part C: Reflecting on your answer to parts A and B, evaluate the key challenges (at least two) related to delivery of ‘responsible’ operations and/or sustainable supply chain management. (50% of marks)
Please ensure your report reflects an application of learning from the module and draws upon academic literature as appropriate. Any data sources used should also be appropriately cited.
Assignment structure: report
The assignment format should be written in the style of a report and should include an introduction, main body (with headings and subheadings) and conclusions.
You may want to adopt the following structure and breakdown for the assignment.
1. Introduction
We strongly recommend that you clearly articulate the aims and scope of your study in the introduction; you might find it helpful to cover the rationale for the Case study selection.
It’s good to open with an introduction of the company you are analysing, this does not need to be very detailed.
2. Main body
Here we would recommend you cover the three areas of the assignment in the main body of your report. Use headings and subheadings to clarify the structure in the main body of the assignment. Do ensure your work is predominantly analytical rather than descriptive.
3. Conclusion
The conclusion at the end does not need to be long either, see this as an opportunity to draw together your main points, and then make some general concluding points.

A note on Referencing
It is essential at MBA level that you properly cite both the academic sources and the materials used to build the case study.
If you choose to base your case study on your own organisation, make sure that you are able to evidence your source material in some way. We have also noticed that people who base case studies on their own organisation often produce very descriptive studies that lack critical analysis, which is something to keep in mind.
If you are basing your work on an organisation that you have already used in a case study in another module, you need to be aware that any similarity in your submissions will be recognised in Turnitin. Therefore, your work should ideally be original, but if there is any reflection of previous work it must be correctly referenced.
