The scenario

The senior management team of Carter University have just completed a five-year plan to implement university-wide computing systems to support all core business processes such as a student management information system, payroll and finance system, and resource management including class timetabling system. Accompanying this expansion in the use of computer systems has been a growing accumulation of transactional data about the university business processes, and senior management are aware that the information processing demands of the university have outgrown the legacy relational database management system (RDBMS) software resulting from both the data explosive growth and the variety of data models.

Senior management of Carter University have a goal to provide key decision makers throughout the university with a data management technology to manage the increasingly large volumes of data that must be available across distributed systems as well as able to evolve and adapt to data models according to the changes of the university’s requirements. However, senior management acknowledge that besides the many milestones that need to be put in place to achieve this goal, the university is currently challenged by the task of ensuring scalability of massive quantities of data while keeping database models simple and flexible at the same time.

Your Task:

[1] Investigate and prepare a 1000 words report on the applicability of an object relational DBMS for the organization. The report should compare the technology of the RDBMS with that of the ORDBMS, and should address the benefits of on the applicability of the ORDBMS for Carter University.

[2] In about 1000 words, review and critically comment on the suitability of a non-evaluation of NoSQL databases in relation to the following:

  1. Management systems);
  2. Opportunities and benefits;
  3. Associated technologies;
  4. Problems and issues;
  5. Emerging trends.
