Instructions:

  • For this assignment, you will compose a 7-8 page critique of a research article. The critique should communicate your understanding of the article’s main points and analyse its strengths and weaknesses.
  • Article critiques typically adhere to the following structure:
  • Research Problem/Purpose
  • Review of the Literature
  • Theoretical Framework
  • Variables/ Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions
  • Methodology
  • What type of design (quantitative, qualitative and type) was used in this study?
  • Data Analysis
  • Summary/ Conclusions, Implications & Recommendations

Guidelines:

  • An electronic copy of your work must be presented using Microsoft Word, Arial text font size 11, with 1½ spacing between lines.
  • Use appropriate sub-headings to structure the work.
  • Academic misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, collusion) is a severe offense; therefore, work must be original and supported by references to scholarly materials.
  • Read widely and interpret the literature in your own words (paraphrasing).
  • Direct quotes should be kept to an absolute minimum.
  • Using APA 6th ed. referencing system, references cited in the body of the text must match those in the end reference list.
  • You are required to submit the assignment in the form of an electronic copy, and submission is via e-mail.
  • Marks will be deducted for grammar and spelling errors.

  • Are the theoretical concepts defined and related to the research?
  • Does the research draw solely on nursing theory, or does it draw on theories from other disciplines?
  • A theoretical/conceptual framework stated in this research piece?
  • Not, suggest one that might be suitable for the study.

D.    Methodology

  • Was inductive or deductive reasoning used in this study?
  • State the sample size, study population, sampling method, and study setting.
  • Did the investigator choose a probability or non-probability sample?
  • How were the data collected? (name the tools used)
  • State the type of reliability and the validity of the measurement tools.
  • Were ethical considerations addressed?
