BUSINESS ETHICS AND GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP QUIZ
Most of the readings are from Business ethics Third edition by Laura P. Hartman. I have all of the readings if you do not have any one of them. It would be preferred if each answer will have the same numerical order.
- As members of the Duquesne University community, a community committed to the “culture of life”, how will you explain your decision not to commit to saving the starving at the level established by Peter Singer. Specifically, which of your values will trump you commitment to the “culture of life” and which ethical theory would justify your decision not to honor his request?
- If you could characterize the decision that you might have made, had you been in the position of Bowen McCoy in “The Parable of the Sadhu”, by reference to one of the Kidder Ethical Paradigms, which one would best reflect the dilemma that you face? And if you responded as McCoy did, which Kohlberg stage would most likely explain your action?
- Your company’s largest client (30% of your annual revenues) has told you that he cannot work with women. He asks you to remove your female associate from his account or he will take his business elsewhere. He tells you that this is not negotiable. How will you respond? Which of your values will dictate your decision? Will you be more inclined to act in a way that is consistent with “The Indivisibility of Ethics” or “Is Bluffing in Business Ethical”? explain.
- Same fact pattern as Question #3. Let us assume that you took the MBA Oath that was discussed in the text, how would you respond to the client in light of that oath?
- The President of your company tells you that as the Human Resources Director he would like you to fire all employees who smoke and don’t kick the habit within six months. He also tells you that going forward the company should not consider hiring anyone who smokes. You disagree with these actions. If you are to act in a way that is consistent with the teleological approach to decision making, what will you do? If you are to act in a way that is consistent with the deontological approach, what will you do?
- In the end which ethical theory might best explain the decision that was ultimately made by Dr. Sakiz in “Defining Moments.”?
- Having read “Informed Consent” and having read about General Motors’ ignition switch problems, what parallels do you see between the two organizations and which “right v. right” dilemma that was discussed in “Defining Moments” would best characterize the dilemma facing these two companies?
- What are the characteristics or attributes of a “NASA like culture” as you see it?
- Starbucks has just announced an education partnership with Arizona State University in which Starbucks would pay for their employees to complete their degrees. How might Milton Friedman (Reading 5-1) react to this proposal, and what might Michael Porter (This week’s TED Talk) have to say in response to this plan?
- If you were to prioritize (rank) a business’s stakeholders what would your ranking look like and why?
