Core Problem – Selling Ideas : Assignment

Selling Ideas – Core Problem

Problem Description You are a software engineer, part of a software product team in an education technology company that creates software for school students (Kindergarten to Grade 12) to enable digital learning (using eBooks, games, simulations, etc.).

These work on web and various devices schools can give to their students (iPad, Galaxy Tab, etc.). The product is live but not many schools are adopting it. You think this is because it doesn’t solve their problems very well.

You got an idea: why not create a panel of students and teachers from nearby schools and get them to regularly use the product and use these inputs to improve the product?

When you broached this idea informally with a few people, you got to hear many concerns:

  • Who will manage them?
  • Do we need to pay them?
  • This is a waste of time for the testing team who now have to deal with these inputs
  • How do we know their inputs are valuable for us?
  • We don’t have space in our office, nor devices, to give them to play with our product
  • And many others..

Even though you strongly believe in your idea, you are worried that this will not be accepted.

This is a small company, and the CEO is involved on a day-to-day basis. He is worried that sales pipeline is dwindling. At the same time, the investment in product development keeps going up, and always pushes the team to deliver everything a potential customer is asking for.

The product team is managed by Director of Product Management who is trying hard to get a few customers on board so that they can be used to further the product roadmap. The product is managed on a day to day basis by a product manager who has too many features to work on, and too little time to think deeply about any of these.

Assignment

You need to get your idea adopted. Create a document to capture your strategy and plan. If you need to make assumptions about this organization (people, their working, process, etc.), please do so and state your assumptions in the document.

Have at least the following sections in your document:

1. Assumptions that you make about the organization.

2. Stakeholders – Who are the stakeholders? Who can help you get this adopted? Who can create roadblocks?

3. What are the barriers to being heard by these stakeholders? What are the stakeholders’ interests, goals, and values that you can leverage/guard against?

4. What will your pitch be? Your pitch should address the majority of concerns upfront and show compelling value to most stakeholders.

5. How do you ensure the stakeholders honour the commitment they make to your idea if they do?
