Assignment No. 1 – Essay
\nIntroduction
\nThis essay is intended to provide students with an understanding of what is required from the modern day building estimator. Building estimating is a highly specialised area which requires appropriately qualified people. Construction companies rely on their building estimators to win work and maintain company viability. As such, we need to be familiar with what we are seeking from a building estimator at the time of their employment.
\nDescription
\nThe topic for the essay is:
\n\u201cThe Criteria for Recruiting a Top Building Estimator\u201d
\nStudents are asked to investigate the field of building estimating in respect to the above topic. The essay is to focus on identifying aspects that are important when assessing a building estimator\u2019s ability to undertake this significant role within a construction company. This will require students to broadly understand building estimating\/tendering activities and describe what is needed from people who work in this area so that a construction company can win profitable building projects.
\nFormat
\nThis is an individual assignment. Each student is expected to refer to relevant literature and possibly source building practitioner thought on the topic. Findings are to be presented in concise essay form. The word count is expected to be around 1000 words. Please use the Harvard referencing system.
\nAll assignments must use the Assignment Cover Sheet as per University of South Australia policy.
\nAssessment
\nAssessment will be based on relevance to topic, quality of information, correctness and good presentation.
\nProportion of total Assessment of Building Estimating 1N: 20%
\nDue Date
\nAssignments are due no later than Thursday 27th August 2015 and are to be submitted at that day\u2019s lecture. Any required extension of time will need to be based on medical or equivalent reasons and approved by the lecturer. This must be applied for using the UniSA standard Application for Extension form prior to the assignment due date. Note that late assignments will be penalised at 5% per day for the period that they are outstanding without an approved extension.
