promote culturally appropriate services in health &amp; social care<\/li>\n<li>Evidence shows the influence of culture, diversity &amp; equality on the availability, accessibility, acceptability &amp; quality of healthcare service provision (Napier, et al, 2014)<\/li>\n<li>UK healthcare services claim to ensure equity &amp; the responsiveness of healthcare services to diverse needs<\/li>\n<li>The aim is to be culturally inclusive<\/li>\n<li>However, evidence shows that there are health inequalities, &amp; disparities in health provision for members of minority groups<\/li>\n<li>This shows that the UK health system does not adequately meet the needs of culturally diverse populations (Gallagher, 2015)<\/li>\n<li>Cultural competency training is supposed help professionals to meet the needs of patients<\/li>\n<li><strong>Definition of \u2018cultural competency\u2019<\/strong>: \u201cA set of congruent behaviours, attitudes and policies, that come together in a system, agency or among professionals, and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.\u201d (Cross, et al, 1989)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In practice, \u2018cultural competence\u2019 is vaguely defined<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evidence shows that current \u2018cultural competency training\u2019 does not do enough to prepare professionals to meet the needs of culturally diverse communities (Turner, et al, 2014)<\/li>\n<li>This seems to be, in part, because the concept of \u2018cultural competence\u2019 is not clearly defined<\/li>\n<li>The most common definitions are North American, &amp; policy is thus often\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 too simplistic (lumps people together re: \u2018culture\u2019)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diversity<\/strong> actually covers a range of differences: \u201cworking in partnership with service users, carers, families &amp; colleagues to provide care &amp; interventions that not only make a positive difference but do so in ways that respect &amp; value diversity in age, race, culture, disability, gender, spirituality, &amp; sexuality\u201d (Hope, 2004, p.3)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>An alternative<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Cultural humility\u2019 rather than \u2018cultural competence\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Definition of Cultural Humility:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncorporates a life-long commitment to self-evaluation &amp; self- critique, addressing power imbalances in the provider-client relationship and to the development of mutually beneficial and dynamic partnerships.\u201d (Tervalon &amp; Murray-Garcia, 1998)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is this a better approach to \u2018cultural competence\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Humility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What does it mean to be \u2018humble\u2019?
